i'm all smiles...

i haven't been able to stop smiling ever since i received these wonderful images from susana, a teacher in portugal who holds a competition in her school's library. students are invited to create work inspired by a particular artist, well this time around susana invited the students (ages 4-13) to create a house which would then become part of a village, inspired by my cartonlandia.....how cool is that?! i feel soooo honored AND have some serious competition :)

christmas ornaments

i don't know what happened to me this year but i'm not excited about thanksgiving at all, i'm all about christmas right now, and especially christmas ornaments, i like to make my own, but they're usually more on the elementary school crafty level (like my hello kitty tree from two years ago, with red glitter bows) but this year i want to make sophisticated-crafty ones, like so...

 and i'll get a one foot tree so i don't have to make that many.

this american life

i just bought the second season of this american life, and it's amazing, i think i like it more than season one, but i still can't say i like it more than the podcast...hmm well maybe...yes, i do and one of the reasons would be the following chris ware animations, the first animation below was featured in season one, and i swear i must of watched it a thousand times already and it still amazes me, and he did one for the second season as well, (that's the second animation below), which i love too, but not as much as the first one...

i was looking at pictures of chichicastenango (in guatemala) on flickr when i found this cemetary!! who wouldn't want to be buried in this cemetary? i definitely have to make it there on my trip to guatemala in may.

estate sale finds

did a little shopping at an estate sale today, i got wrapping paper, a girls scouts of america music book, a pillow case, and a doily, all for $1.50! score! love the type of the girls scouts book, so fun.

i still can't get over it...

i watched coraline last sunday, & i'm still amazed by the fact that it's a stop motion animation, and everything, and i mean EVERYTHING was made by hand...i don't know what it is about stop motion but i really love it, but this is a whole other level that's just OUT OF CONTROL...

grandparents

every once in a while i ask my grandparents "to draw me something," then they look at me confused and giggle, they're not artists, not by any means, but they participate and i love their drawings, they're sweet!

"la mona" in tijuana

when i was little i remember seeing "la mona" on spanish television, and i remember thinking it was the coolest thing in the world, a man building himself a house shaped like a woman! and the coolest thing is that the kitchen is in the belly, the library is in her head, and he sleeps in her breasts!
so finally after soo many years, i asked my grandpa to take me to her on one of our recent trips to tijuana,
it was definitely worth the wait, although she's pretty banged up, it's still incredible to see in person.

inspiring: interactive public art

this public art piece was outside the "palacio de bellas artes" (an opera house) in mexico city, when i visited in aug'06, i liked how everyone couldn't help but play in/with it, i think it's the only public art piece i've seen that truly invites the public to interact with it, in a fun way.
